Victor Cockburn
Executive Director of Troubadour, Inc.
A producer, songwriter, performer and teacher Victor has worked as an Artist Educator
since 1972. He has been presenting his programs in schools and other
institutions since 1974. His work in schools brings the richness and
variety of folk music from many different cultures into the classroom as
a learning and teaching tool, working in partnership with teachers
supporting and enhancing on-going curriculum. In the classroom
workshops, students are exposed to and explore the processes used in
composing a lyrical folk song. The students use classroom curriculum as
well as everyday experiences and observations as sources of material.
Victor has worked extensively with Special Needs and Bi-lingual
populations in public, private and residential settings. For his family
performances Victor was awarded the Boston Parents' Paper Entertainer of
the Year Award. His article "The Use of Folk Song and Songwriting in the
Classroom" is published in the Harvard Educational Review (Vol. 61 No. 1
Feb. 1991). Victor produced 60 segments of a weekly multi-cultural arts
program series, Try It!, on Brookline Access Television.
Victor currently has ten recordings of children's songs and poems produced in collaboration with Judith Steinbergh. Their multicultural curriculum CD and book set, Where I Come From! Songs and Poems From Many Cultures won a 1992 Parents Choice Award for Best Children's Recording as well as an award from the Early Childhood Educator. Their CD set, Get Ready for Boston! Exploring Boston and its Neighborhoods in Songs, Poems and Songs also won a 1996 Parents Choice Award.
